Winter at Abisko Mountain Station begins in December, when we welcome guests from all over the world, the world’s best place to see the northern lights. There is something truly magical with the northern lights during mid-winter in Abisko.
The Aurora Sky Station, on our home mountain Nuolja, is quiet and dark and waiting for you. From here you have excellent opportunity to spot the northern light.
Christmas is celebrated according to tradition and then it’s peace, enjoyment and happiness together with a number of fun activities daily that prevail. The New Year offers luxurious days filled with joy, hope and perhaps some new vows.
The ski season gets going in February with white expanses, alpine ski tours, ski touring, off-piste skiing, nice cross-country tracks, the northern lights and après ski. Each month offers up a variety of experiences. In March, the new snow on the mountain is fluffy and thick and the sun gradually begins to warm. In April, the days are long and the sun will tan your nose. In May, the sun shines from the sky all day and night. The snow is like sugar and think about this wild idea: you ski at midnight and it’s still light outside!
The winter is also the dreamtime of year for our mountain guides, when they’re in the mountain almost all day. We have several courses for you who really enjoy skiing as well as an alpine ski touring weekend Abisko-Narvik, avalanche course, off-piste skiing, or why not try a telemark course this winter. Or join one of our popular ski mountaineering weeks, when we go to Norway and try for a 1,000 metres of vertical drop in wonderful off-piste skiing each day.
For more than 100 years, people from all over the world have been coming to Abisko, 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. Here, enjoy a superb life in the mountains and discover Lapporten, Lake Torneträsk, our home mountain Nuolja, and the Abisko Canyon. The well-known Kungsleden (The King’s Trail) starts and ends here.
