STF Hostel Sköldinge
Sköldinge lies in the middle of the diverse landscape of Södermanland.
Once described by renowned Swedish author Selma Lagerlöf as “The fair Garden of Eden,” Sköldinge is not only a hostel but also one of the oldest folk high schools in the country, dating from 1872.
The school used to be called ‘bondeuppfostringsanstalten’, which loosely translates to ‘facility for raising children of farmers’ and was where farmers’ sons were educated in agriculture and taught to be good citizens. The oldest houses in the area date back just over a century.
It’s not far to the nearest bathing lake from the hostel, and bikes and canoes are available to rent. Behind the school is the well-lit Sköldinge exercise-trail, and the Sörmlandsleden (Sörmland trail) is just 5 km away. The Sörmland riding trail and Näckrosleden bicycle path also pass Sköldinge.
The hostel is close to many places of interest. The Julita gård museum of living history with Pettsongården (Pettson’s farm), Sagostigen (the fairy-tale trail) in Malmköping, Parken Zoo in Eskilstuna, Gripsholms Slott (castle), the cathedral in Strängnäs, Rademachersmedjorna (a traditional smithy) in Eskilstuna and the Vrå stone age village are just some of the many attractions in the area.
