STF Hostel Flyinge Kungsgård
Flyinge is an old but still living center for horses and horse culture, frequented by horse enthusiasts and those interested in history. You stay in ancient buildings in stunning natural surroundings and walk in the steps of centuries of horses and riders.
Flyinge royal estate is located next to Kävlingeån, ten kilometres northeast of Lund. The place has a special atmosphere with classical buildings, elegant carriages, and graceful storks nesting in the barn roofs.
Flyinge’s main task is to supply Sweden’s horse breeders with good stallions, but we also conducts training activities with students of hippology, young horse training and farrier training with about 180 students. The hostel is part of the horse center and was built in 2004, and is used during the school term as student housing.
Flyinge is ideal for all kinds of events, with our four indoor arenas, restaurant and conference facilities. We often arrange weddings, formal dinners, office parties, theme nights and naturally courses and clinics intended for people with interest in horses.
During the day, you are welcome to walk around, visit the stables and have a picnic in the park - picnic baskets can be purchased at the restaurant Kungsgården. Why not join a guided tour? Our restaurant “The Royal Estate” is open all summer and serves breakfast, lunch and if you order in advance also dinner.
Within twenty kilometres from Flyinge you can experience canoeing, golfing, swimming, fishing, great shopping in Malmo and numerous attractions such as the Cathedral of Lund and Bosjö monastery. Flyinge is only one hour drive from Copenhagen if you want to experience Denmark too.
Flyinge royal estate is one of the oldest stud farms still in operation and its history as a hippological center goes back to the early middle Ages. In the 1100s there was a fortified Bishop’s estate here where the famous Danish bishop Absalon staged a major horse-breeding facility in order to provide the cavalry with horses.
After the Peace of Roskilde in 1658, King Carl Gustaf ordered that a stud farm was to be established in southern Sweden and in 1661 Flyinge was referred to the Swedish crown. A true heyday began in 1814 when the great hippologist Adam Ehrengranat was appointed as director. Under his able leadership Flyinge developed into something rare at that time: an internationally known Swedish institution.
