STF Hostel Arkösund

The hostel is just outside Arkösund, right by the water and with a bathing-place around the corner. Here you experience the wonderful lifestyle of the archipelago and make many expeditions of discovery on the water. If you are fortunate you may see a seal.

The hostel and timbered, Bavarian style café, is situated right by the beach with a view out over the rocky islets, the  skerries, and the open sea. In the morning, the sun rises over the water and lights up the terraces, made of Öland stones that are bordered with lavender and lilac. The beach is shallow and very suitable for bathing, sunbathing or just enjoying lying in the shade under a coastal pine tree.

Arkösund is famous for its herring fishing and it is still possible to catch the sea’s silver with a jigging rod. The hostel is also an excellent starting point for fishing trips, kayak trips and other archipelago experiences – why not go on a seal safari or pay a visit to a genuine archipelago cultural environment?

The hostel café was built in 1939 by Director Elis Sköld and his wife Ditti Sköld, to be used as a summer cottage. In September1955, Mrs Sköld died suddenly of a brain haemorrhage. Before the house was eventually renovated and made into a hostel, it was a children’s holiday camp for a number of years for children from Gällivare municipality. Several people who have lived or worked at Sköldvik say that the place is haunted by Mrs Sköld. The hosts of the hostel today have kept a careful look out for her, but they still do not know what to believe.
