The Royal Trail

It can be said right away – Kungsleden between Abisko and Hemavan is one of the world’s best hiking trails. An almost 400-kilometre adventure that the Swedish Tourist Association began at the beginning of the 1900s. Footbridges, bridges and trails make the path safe and STF huts are never far away.

All the while, the vastness of nature experiences creates excitement. Deep precipices line lush mountain moors and rippling mountain streams become lathering rapids.

You can begin and end your hike at Abisko, Nikkaluokta, Saltoluokta, Kvikkjokk, Ammarnäs and Hemavan. Choose the area depending on the type of hiking and wilderness you would like.

The stretch between Abisko and Nikkaluokta is both the most alpine and most walked. Kebnekaise’s white peaks provide an added attraction. Even south towards Saltoluokta, Kungsleden winds its way through a wild mountain landscape, where kilometre after kilometre of u-shaped valleys and lakes take our thoughts to Alaska.

The tour between Saltoluokta and Kvikkjokk changes between bare mountain region and the border region between forest and mountain. Sarek forms a high background up to the trail. South of Kvikkjokk, Sweden’s most beautiful mountain birch forests spread out, followed by low mountain plateaux. The bare mountain region between Ammarnäs and Hemavan is impressively high, but trails running through the valleys are easily walked. Kungsleden offers mountain adventure for everyone.
