It is not always certain that you can use a cell phone in the mountains! This is partly because the network is not built-up, partly because of hilly mountain terrain with very long distances. Cell phones can only be used in the telephone networks where one is connected.

The network’s coverage is often good in larger, built-up areas and along the most trafficked roads. In the mountain world, Telia has the least bad coverage today.

In the area around Storulvån-Blåhammaren-Sylarna-Helags in the mountain of Jämtland and in Vindelfjällen in southern Lapland, customers can connect to Telia’s network and have decent range as long as they move within sight of the highly located base stations.

In the mountains of northern Lapland, cell phone network coverage is very limited, and often completely non-existent, since the area is large and the number of base stations few. Among others, this applies to Kungsleden Abisko-Kvikkjokk, Padjelantaleden och Nordkalott trail.

The possibility to get contact increases in close proximity to larger roads and at STF’s mountain stations.

Remember that the telephone’s batteries are sensitive to cold.
