STF Mountain hut Tarrekaise

STF Tarrekaise is in thickly wooded verdure near the northern beach of Tarraure. The hut lies along the Padjelanta Trail between Kvikkjokk and Staloluokta. From here, the spectacular scenery is of Staika’s twin peaks that surround a sparkling glacier.

Take a nice cooling dip when you arrive. There is a bathing spot in Tarraure, where the mountains reflect beautifully in the water.

Above the mountain hut lies the small mountain plateau Hilldo, with its spectacular view over the Tarra Valley –  a good, secluded place for relaxation and meditation. For those who want to feel a little of a sense of history, there is the old Tarra River cabin five kilometres away along the trail to Vaimok. The cabin, from 1887, is today STF’s oldest building and an excellent outing destination.

The Tarra Valley has a rich flora with the Northern Wolfsbane, Globe-flower, Alpine Lady-Fern and Moor-king. And the area has true bird life with, among others, grouse, black grouse, tufted duck and the Long-tailed Skua. Walk quietly along the trail and with a little luck, you can come in close contact with the large elk grazing in the lush birch forest.

You cannot book a bed in a mountain hut. You are, however, guaranteed a roof over your head. There are extra mattresses for those days when all the beds are taken.
