STF Hostel Östersund/Ledkrysset

The Ledkrysset hostel lies in the centre of Östersund but houses the spirit of the mountains. This is an old fire station from the early 20th century. Östersund’s shopping district is close, as are swimming on Andersön and the skiing facilities at Åre.

The mountains feel really close at Östersund, with Oviksfjäll as a spectacular backdrop, skiing at Åreskutan, and fell walking and mountain stations of the Jämtland mountains only an hour or so away. That’s why it is both natural and exotic to share the spirit of the mountains with our guests in the centre of town. We have equipped the hostel as a mountain station and filled every corner with mountain feeling – the mountain breeze and birdsong, waterfalls and fallen birches. Welcome to the Swedish mountains!

As you would expect from a real tourist resort, Östersund is full of things to see and do all year round. The ice of Storsjön is the natural meeting place during the winter. There are miles of prepared ski trails and ploughed skating rinks on the ice. Badhusparken offers sunbathing in real deckchairs, traditional “kolbullar” (meat filled pancakes), and the opportunity to take part in many activities, suitable for both young and old. The winter in Östersund culminates in the Winter Festival. The town is transformed for two weeks into a place where darkness meets light and coldness meets warmth, a place where the events on offer include the largest lightshow in Sweden.

The tigers in Frösö Zoo wake up in the summer. The zoo is one of Sweden’s largest with 700 species on an area of 42 hectares. The zoo also has white wolves, lions, zebras, and many other animals, with circus performances and a funfair.

Jamtli Historyland also awakens to life in the summer. The preserved historical surroundings at the Jämtland County Museum are populated by staff in historical costumes. The steamer Thommé has been freed from the ice and is crossing the waters of Storsjön with decks filled with passengers, while the Great Lake Monster lurks in the reeds.

The newly renovated swimming centre, Storsjöbadet, with flumes, children’s oasis and a new relax for adults, is just round the corner from the hostel. You can go swimming in the bays at Andersön during the summer, or from the island’s old steamboat wharf – if you dare!

Ledkrysset has accommodation for all levels of comfort and all pockets, from a bed in a shared room to single or double en suite rooms. We have spacious and well-planned family rooms. The hostel has large common areas where you can socialise and meet new friends, in the common room, games corner, TV room, or large south-facing terrace.
