STF Mountain hut Vålåvalen-Vålåstugorna

This STF hut is on the border between forest and mountain with scenery of the lakes and bogs. Good fishing is nearby and fishing permits can be arranged on site. Tracks from predatory animals are not uncommon. The hut is also open over New Year’s.

Hiking trails from the hut go in five directions towards Stensdalen, Gåsen, Helags, Lunndörren and Vålådalen. From here, you can also choose between various types of shorter mountain tours, as well as enjoy rich groups of orchids and other mountain flowers south of the bridge over the Härjång stream. Fishing enthusiasts usually find their way to the small lakes of Krok, and there are traces of stone-age settlements and the remains of pre-historic grave around Lake Vålå.

Copper was quarried on the southern slope of Gruvsmällen for a time during the 1800s, and signs still remain. Smaller water-filled pits and the remains of a mining cabin in stone are found three kilometres west of the hut.

You cannot book a bed in a mountain hut. You are, however, guaranteed a roof over your head. There are extra mattresses for those days when all the beds are taken.
