Gotland
This hostel is a true family paradise in south-eastern Gotland. Here you swim in the pool, play mini golf, organise a garden party or borrow bicycles and go for a ride to the sea, where there is a beach and the fishing village, Tomtbod.
At the hostel every amusement in the area is included in the price of accommodation. There is a 140 centimetre deep swimming pool, and a small mini golf course where everyone can play. There are also around twenty bicycles, of different sizes, which are loaned free to the visitors.
The hostel is situated about 800 metres from the sea, where there is a small fishing harbour and, very close by, a small sandy beach, with a jetty and a children’s playground. Beyond the bathing place is the start of the Ålarve nature reserve with its beach meadows, grazing sheep and rich bird life. The nature reserve, having asphalt paths, is also accessible for the disabled and there are viewpoints along the way. There are several areas with bronze age cairns in the district, for example Gotland’s largest cairn, Uggarde roir. If you enjoy playing Kubb (a game with wooden sticks), you will have plenty of fun during the first weekend in August each year, when the Kubb World Championship is arranged in Rone.
The main building at Gula Hönan was built in the middle of the 19th century by the merchant and the German Consul Cramér. At that time, Ronehamn was one of the largest shipping ports on Gotland. The name Gula Hönan comes from the 18th century, when there was an inn called Gula Hönan (The Yellow Hen) on the land. Tourism came to the house in the 1930s when Annie Beutelrock-Krokstedt started to rent out rooms to support herself and her daughters, since her husband had abandoned them. That Annie was also harbour-master in Ronehamn and had her harbour office in the building.
