The Norwegian neighbours

STF Grövelsjön Mountain Station is located close to the Norwegian border. The scenery from the dining room could be part of an advertisement for Norway’s mountain world. You can go there with the mountain station guides or find your own way. The trails are numerous and the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) also offers accommodation in the area.

On the Norwegian side, the landscape is characterised by Lake Femunden, which goes in a north-south direction. It is Norway’s third largest lake and the area is called Femundsmarka. The nature is full of contrasts, with its extensive lake, bogs, mountain farms, forested areas and bare peaks. An almost obligatory tour goes to the peak of Store Svuku, called by Carl von Linné “a giant among pygmies”.

The Svukuriset Mountain Station, in a beautiful old farm, is the centre on the east side of Femunden. The lake is occupied by passenger boats. But you can still get till Røros by boat and boots. If you choose to stay on the east side, you can walk to places like Valdalen or Røvollen.

A very nice round trip is to hike from Grövelsjön via the Norwegian mountains up to the Rogen Nature Reserve on the Swedish side. At STF Skedbro, get on to the trail between Grövelsjön and Tänndalen, for a three-day tour back to Grövelsjön Mountain Station. The rolling landscape of Rogen is soon replaced by the usual mountain valleys. Of course, you can also hike the tour in the opposite direction.
