General information

STF’s mountain huts are beautifully situated, 10-20 km from each other along well-marked summer and winter trails. The huts are simple, but have a comfortable standard and are intended for self-catering without electricity and running water.

Here, you will chop wood, light a fire in the stove, cook food, fetch water, do dishes and clean. You sleep with your own sheets or sleeping bag in dormitory-style rooms equipped with bunk beds, mattresses, pillows and blankets. Space in a mountain hut cannot be reserved (in Arådalen you can). Hut wardens allocate beds and everyone receives a place to sleep.

Larger groups can notify of planned overnight to STF to facilitate the allocation of sleeping spaces and thus be offered special group prices.

All hut spaces have room for guests with dogs. The hut warden can help with information, take payment and sell provisions.

Provision sales

Many mountain huts have shops with tinned goods, rice, pasta, mashed potatos, soups, bread, a variety of sandwich meats and cheese, candy, light beer and soft drinks. Occasionally, gas canisters, alcohol or spirits for stoves, mountain maps and insect repellent are also available. The idea is that you should be able to do a mountain tour without carrying heavy provisions between the huts.

Season, prices and opening times

The winter season is from the end of February until the end of April or beginning of May. The summer season varies from the end of June until the middle or end of September. It is cheaper to stay in a mountain hut at the beginning of the season. The opening times of mountain huts can differ between area and from mountain stations. Some mountain huts are even open over New Year’s.

 Visitors to mountain huts pay the hut custodian for lodging. Non-members pay an additional 100 SEK per night. Children pay 50 SEK per night. Day visitors and tenters pay the service fees.  

Payment can be made with cash or credit card, though only typical cards. STF’s group card for hostels is not applicable at STF’s mountain facilities.

Safety rooms between seasons

STF’s mountain huts are closed between seasons, but a safety room is open year-round. Staying overnight is accepted, but the gas is closed and access to kitchen equipment and firewood is limited. There is an emergency telephone to contact mountain rescue in the safety room.
